Is the dog course mandatory in Basel-Stadt?

For first-time owners, yes. Since 1 April 2025, anyone keeping a dog for the first time must attend the «Human and Dog Basel-Stadt» basic course.

Scope
Eight practical lessons with some theory elements. No exam.
Deadline
Within twelve months of acquiring the dog.
Minimum age of the dog
Four months at the start of the course.
Organisation
The course is organised by the Swiss association for canine training. The veterinary office publishes the list of approved providers.
